The Central region of Portugal was the most affected by forest fires between 2020 and 2025, leading in terms of burned area during this five-year period. The data is from the National Statistics Institute and reveals the dimension of the fire problem in the country.
During these five years, more than 50 thousand fires were recorded in Portuguese territory, which demonstrates the high frequency of these phenomena. The Central region was the one that suffered the most severe consequences, with the largest total burned area.
The North region came in second in terms of area affected by fires. This situation reinforces the vulnerability of the central and northern inland areas of the country to forest fires, particularly during the summer months.
