Germans say the Algarve is one of the most "picturesque regions in Europe" and highlight these 7 islands

The German newspaper Reisereporter published an article describing the Algarve as one of the "most picturesque regions in Europe", dedicating the publication to a side of the region that, according to the media outlet, continues to go unnoticed by many tourists. Instead of focusing on beaches surrounded by cliffs or the most internationally known destinations, such as Albufeira and Lagos, the newspaper headed to Sotavento and highlighted seven islands and insular areas of the Algarve.

The list begins with Deserta Island, also known as Barreta, accessible from Faro, which is described as a destination for those looking to spend a day by the sea away from the busiest areas. These are followed by Tavira Island, considered one of the most beautiful in the region, and Culatra Island, inhabited but with no car traffic, where transportation is done essentially on foot after the boat trip from Olhão.

The fourth choice is Farol, known for the Cape Santa Maria Lighthouse, and the fifth is Fuzeta Island, pointed out as a particularly interesting option for families with children. The German publication also highlights Armona Island, accessible by boat from Olhão, which is described by Turismo de Portugal as a "true paradise free of cars and stress". Finally, the last recommendation is Cabanas Island, in Tavira, especially suitable for those who enjoy long walks along the sea.

All these islands are practically integrated in the Ria Formosa, a natural park that concentrates some of the most diverse beaches in the Algarve, formed by calm waters, large sandy areas and small islets that contrast with the cliffs and small coves of Barlavento. Turismo de Portugal describes this space as an "environmental treasure", where, in several of these destinations, a boat trip is required before reaching the beach.
