The National Republican Guard intercepted almost 8,500 drivers with alcohol in their blood between January and July, according to data from the first seven months of the year. This number is part of a total of 8,856 crimes related to blood alcohol levels recorded during this period.

The GNR is the body responsible for traffic enforcement in national territory, being the entity that carries out these operations to control and identify drivers in a state of intoxication. The authorities have intensified enforcement efforts in this area as a measure to prevent road accidents.

Alcohol-related crimes constitute one of the main causes of road accidents on Portuguese roads. The authorities continue to appeal for compliance with road safety rules and driver responsibility to reduce the number of accidents associated with drinking and driving.
