The Central Bank of Brazil (BC) is participating in discussions to link Pix with Europe's instant payment system, TIPS. According to a document from the European Central Bank (ECB), the possible connection is in an initial phase, called "pre-investigation," with "high-level" participation from different areas, such as operational, security, technical, and legal. The information was revealed by the newspaper Folha de S.Paulo and confirmed by GLOBO.
The current stage began in June of last year and is expected to end this month. Then, according to the ECB document, there would be two more phases: exploration and implementation. When contacted, the BC did not respond to the request for comment on the matter.
In the Pix Management Report 2023-2025, published in August, the Brazilian monetary authority had already stated that it is evaluating the interconnection of Pix with instant payment systems from other jurisdictions. The BC is considering both bilateral models, which is the case of the initiative with the ECB, as well as participation in multilateral hubs, such as Nexus.
