Volkswagen plans to discontinue the SEAT brand by 2029 in favor of Cupra. Learn the reasons

SAPO Notícias3 September 2026 at 18:21

Volkswagen plans to discontinue the SEAT brand by 2029, transferring its assets to the sports subsidiary Cupra. The strategy was revealed in a document intended for the supervisory board of the German group, which outlines the gradual extinction of the Spanish brand. The decision comes in a context of restructuring of the Volkswagen group, which intends to concentrate its resources on the most profitable brands with the greatest growth potential.

The Cupra brand, which was born as a sports sub-brand of SEAT in 2018, will be the main beneficiary of this transition. The strategy envisages that the models and technology currently associated with SEAT will be gradually integrated into Cupra, which will position itself as the sports brand of the group. This change reflects Volkswagen's intention to strengthen its presence in the electric and sports vehicle segment.

Trade unions have already expressed their opposition to the plan. Representatives of the workers warned that the process of discontinuing SEAT "will not be peaceful," signaling potential labor conflicts. The Spanish brand employs thousands of workers in Barcelona and the Balearic Islands, and the extinction of the brand could have significant consequences for local employment.

The decision to abandon the SEAT brand marks the end of a story that began in 1950. For decades, SEAT was the main volume brand of the Volkswagen group in Spain and a reference in the European automotive market. With the transition to Cupra, Volkswagen hopes to reposition itself more competitively in a market undergoing transformation toward electric mobility.
