Life in the local church prepares leaders for society

oglobo3 September 2026 at 17:41

Youth departments, volunteer work schedules, Bible study classes, and small social projects function as an informal leadership school for millions of Brazilians who participate in local churches. This is what pastor Esdras Carvalho, professor of oratory and homiletics and leadership trainer, describes when analyzing how passing through these roles develops skills such as communication, people management, and responsibility.

According to the 2022 Demographic Census by IBGE, 26.9% of Brazilians declare themselves evangelical, compared to 21.6% in 2010, which expands the base of people who take on early functions such as coordinating a team, organizing an event, or preparing a message for a congregation.

Carvalho has been teaching oratory and homiletics for more than thirty years and has trained more than twenty-five thousand students. He states that these competencies developed in the religious environment also accompany the individual outside of it.
