The mayor of the Municipal Council of Figueira da Foz, Pedro Santana Lopes, expects the Municipal Police force to be operational in the first quarter of 2027, with an initial staff of 15 agents. At today's City Council meeting (3), the executive approved, by majority, the opening of an external competition for the hiring of 15 second-class municipal agents. The council had approved, at the end of 2025, the proposal for the regulation and operation of the Municipal Police, whose creation should represent an annual cost of approximately half a million euros. The new force is expected to be housed next to the Firefighters' barracks, in the future Municipal Civil Protection Centre.
At the same meeting, the executive announced an investment of three million euros from Turismo de Portugal for the construction of the Quiaios bypass, corresponding to approximately 80% of the planned investment. With approximately 3.5 kilometres, one lane in each direction and a cycling path, the new road connects Quiaios to the beach and aims to remove traffic from the town centre, especially during summer. The construction began in October 2025, represents a municipal investment of approximately four million euros, plus VAT, and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
The Quiaios bypass process had been initiated in 2022, with negotiations between the municipality and the Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests, responsible for managing the plots crossed by the bypass. Councillor João Martins also announced that the Pincho industrial zone, currently undergoing infrastructure works, will receive additional funding of 1.7 million euros under the Centro 2030 program.
