Brussels suspends meat imports from Brazil due to possible misuse of antibiotics

The European Commission on Thursday, September 3, suspended imports of beef and poultry from Brazil due to non-compliance with European sanitary standards, specifically related to the possible improper use of antibiotics in animals.

The measure was taken after the agreement between the European Union and Mercosur had been provisionally activated four months ago, which allowed a significant increase in imports of Brazilian meat.

As a result of this trade opening, European imports of Brazilian beef increased 36% in 2025, reaching nearly 120,000 tons.

The decision by Brussels aims to protect the health of European consumers and ensure that imported products comply with the rigorous sanitary standards required by European Union legislation.
