Norway seizes Russian ship in the Arctic due to Ukraine's compensation claim over Crimea

Euronews Portugal3 September 2026 at 10:04

Norwegian authorities seized in Svalbard an expedition cruise ship belonging to Russians. The seizure was carried out at the request of Naftogaz, the Ukrainian public company that is pursuing Russian assets to execute compensation linked to the illegal annexation of Crimea.

The seizure request was made by Naftogaz as part of its efforts to obtain compensation for damages caused by Russia's annexation of Crimea. The company is trying to locate and seize Russian assets in foreign jurisdictions to satisfy its compensation claims.

Svalbard, a Norwegian territory in the Arctic, was the location where authorities proceeded with the seizure of the expedition cruise ship. The action demonstrates how Ukraine's legal fight for compensation extends to various international jurisdictions.

The seizure of the ship represents one of multiple efforts by Naftogaz to recover funds related to the annexation of Crimea, using courts and authorities in different countries to identify and seize Russian assets that can be used to satisfy the compensation owed.
