Agriculture in the era of connectivity: five technologies transforming the countryside

Jornal Económico3 September 2026 at 16:34

Agriculture is undergoing a profound digital transformation, combining traditional farmer knowledge with technologies such as satellites, sensors, algorithms, and robots. According to an analysis by Stratesys, the agro sector is entering the Precision Agriculture 2.0 phase, which distinguishes itself from the first phase through the connection between systems, data integration, and automation of operational decisions. Luis Piguillem, associate director at Stratesys, emphasizes that technology does not replace accumulated experience but complements it with more precise information and helps anticipate risks.

Experts identify five technologies that are redefining agricultural activity: sensors and the Internet of Things, which enable measurement of soil moisture and nutrient levels; satellites and drones for remote monitoring and early pest detection; artificial intelligence and predictive analytics to anticipate risks and optimize schedules; robotics for tasks such as seeding and selective spraying; and blockchain for food traceability and transparency in the production chain.

In Portugal, the Utilized Agricultural Area corresponded to 41.9% of the national territory in 2023, according to INE data. The country has been strengthening the adoption of technologies that improve resource efficiency and support more sustainable management of agricultural holdings. The combined application of these technologies enables the shift from uniform management to a selective intervention model, using resources only where and when needed.
