SC Beira-Mar officially announced today the signing of Ibrahima Sy, a 23-year-old midfielder, formerly of Columbus Crew in the United States. The player has been training with the team practically since the start of the season and received a positive evaluation from coach Fabeta. Born in the USA, Sy holds dual Senegalese and French nationality, having also played for clubs in Belgium, England and France.
Last season, the midfielder played 23 matches for Columbus Crew's B team, scoring one goal. The player is currently fit to join the first team, pending the coach's decision.
After eliminating União de Lamas from the Portuguese Cup, Beira-Mar resumes the Portuguese Championship on Sunday with a trip to Cinfães. The Aveiro-based team is looking for their first victory in the competition, having drawn 1-1 in the opening round and lost at home to Machico in the previous round.
Cinfães, Sunday's opponent, beat Sousense 2-0 in the first round and eliminated SC Espinho from the Portuguese Cup. The second round match between the two teams was initially postponed to September 29, but will now be played earlier.
