The Republican National Guard (GNR) detained 8,438 drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol between January 1 and July 31, 2026. During this period, the police force recorded a total of 8,856 road crimes related to alcohol levels equal to or greater than 1.20 g/l.
The data was released by the National Traffic Unit, which also revealed the weekly average of detentions and crimes recorded during this period.
The authorities continue to reinforce road safety controls to combat driving under the influence of alcohol, which remains one of the main causes of accidents on Portuguese roads.
