UMinho hosts Ibero-American meeting of university ombudsman offices for the first time outside Latin America

Braga TV3 September 2026 at 14:39

The University of Minho hosts, between September 6 and 8, the VI Meeting of the Ibero-American Network of University Ombudsman Offices (RIdDU), in an edition that takes place for the first time outside Latin America. The event marks a historic moment for the Portuguese institution and for the network, which until now held its meetings exclusively in Latin American countries.

The meeting brings together about 70 representatives and specialists from seven Ibero-American countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Spain, Mexico, Peru, and Portugal. This significant number of participants demonstrates the interest and importance that the Ibero-American academic community attributes to the theme of university ombudsman offices.

University ombudsman offices are instances responsible for defending the rights of members of the academic community, functioning as intermediary bodies between students, faculty, and higher education institutions. The exchange of experiences among participating countries allows for the identification of good practices and the strengthening of these protection mechanisms.

The choice of the University of Minho to host this event for the first time outside Latin America reflects the international recognition of the Portuguese institution in the field of university rights defense and its commitment to Ibero-American cooperation in the educational sector.

Colombia's justice orders suspension of bombings against guerrillas when there is suspicion of minors' presence

A Colombian judge determined on Thursday that the government of President Abelardo de la Espriella suspend military bombings against guerrilla camps when there is information about the presence of recruited minors. The new right-wing president, supported by Donald Trump, implements a hard-line approach against drug trafficking cartels, with lethal bombings and mass extraditions to the United States.

Pending asylum and green card through marriage: be careful before withdrawing the application

The article warns about the risks of withdrawing a pending asylum application when seeking permanent residence through marriage to an American citizen. According to the USCIS NTA issuance policy published in February 2025, withdrawal of an asylum application is among the circumstances in which the agency may issue an NTA, initiating removal proceedings. The text highlights that the two processes — asylum and adjustment of status through marriage — can coexist, but have their own rules and different consequences depending on the manner of entry into the US, immigration history, and stage of each process. The guidance is that any decision to withdraw asylum should only be made after consultation with a licensed immigration attorney, as a pending application does not equate to legal immigration status and withdrawal may create unnecessary procedural risks.
