The National Statistics Institute (INE) revealed that Covilhã was the municipality with the largest burned area in Portugal between 2020 and 2025. This INE analysis focused on territorial exposure to rural fire hazard during that period.

According to INE data, the ten municipalities with the largest burned area in the same period are all located in the North and Central regions of the country. This geographic concentration highlights the particular vulnerability of these regions to rural fires.

The analysis by the National Statistics Institute makes it possible to identify the areas of Portuguese territory most exposed to fire risk, providing important data for the prevention and planning of civil protection strategies.
