Half of the country's municipal councils now offer extended hours until 7 PM for Pre-School and First Cycle. This extension of hours represents a significant change in the organization of educational services in Portugal.

In some municipalities, children have access to extracurricular activities during this extended period. In other cases, the extension of hours only means the provision of supervision and monitoring of students until 7 PM, without additional activities.
