GNR detains approximately 280 drivers per week with criminal-rate alcohol levels

TVI Notícias3 September 2026 at 15:01

Until July of this year, the Republican National Guard intercepted on average 280 drivers per week with criminal-rate alcohol levels in their blood. These detentions were recorded over the first seven months of the year, revealing the extent of the problem of driving under the influence of alcohol in Portugal.

The majority of drivers detained for alcohol excess were between 51 and 64 years old, a finding that challenges the common perception that it is mainly young people who drive under the influence of alcohol. This age group thus represents a significant risk group for this type of offense.

The figures presented by the GNR highlight the need to maintain enforcement efforts on Portuguese roads, particularly regarding the control of drivers' alcohol levels.
