American Thomas Fahmy, a resident of Staten Island, in New York, survived after being struck by lightning while walking down the street on the afternoon of August 27. The incident occurred around 4:30 PM, when he had left work and was heading to a dentist appointment.
A security camera installed nearby captured the moment the lightning strikes the man, who falls immediately to the ground. Fahmy told ABC News that he saw "a bright white flash" before falling, and described the sensation as "horrible," saying it was an experience he had never had in his entire life.
After being struck, Fahmy stayed outside asking for help. A woman carrying a child found him and allowed him to enter her home to receive assistance.
