SRAM is investing 57 million euros in the construction of a third industrial unit in Coimbra, which is expected to become operational by mid-2028. The investment will create more than 530 jobs and will triple the company's production capacity, which currently has 324 workers in the two existing units in the city.
The general director of SRAM Portugal, Isabel Gomes, explained that the goal is to produce many more bicycle components, in order to allow equipping a bicycle entirely from Portugal. Thus, a European builder will be able to purchase all necessary products from SRAM Portugal, significantly expanding the range of components currently produced in Coimbra for supplying the European market.
The Secretary of State for Economy, João Rui Ferreira, attended the groundbreaking ceremony and revealed that the investment benefits from public support of around 16 to 17 million euros, representing approximately 30 percent of the total investment, under the contractual investment regime. The official highlighted that the project represents the type of investment Portugal aims to attract, based on innovation, technology and higher added value.
The mayor of Coimbra, Ana Abrunhosa, explained that the partial suspension of the Municipal Master Plan made it possible to streamline the process and reduce costs for the investment. The mayor highlighted that the speed of licensing and the coordination with the different entities involved placed Coimbra at an advantage compared to other possible locations for this investment.
