New rules make hiring teachers easier

SAPO Notícias3 September 2026 at 14:07

A new law has been approved to facilitate the hiring of teachers in Portugal. This legislation establishes new rules that allow schools to retain experienced teachers for longer.

According to the new law, teachers who postpone their retirement to continue teaching will be entitled to an extra remuneration of 750 euros per month. This amount aims to compensate professionals who choose to remain active in the teaching career.

However, this benefit is only granted when there is no availability of other teachers to carry out the necessary work. In other words, the measure functions as a backup solution when there is a shortage of qualified teachers.

The measure aims to address the need to guarantee continuity of education, allowing schools to rely on retired teachers when they face difficulties in filling vacancies with professionals still at the beginning of their careers.
