Gloria Steinem, one of the main references of the feminist movement in the United States, died at 92. The activist, writer, and journalist died at her home, in the city of New York, on Wednesday. Her family and the foundation that bears her name did not disclose the cause of death.
The Gloria Steinem Foundation reported that she died peacefully, surrounded by some of the many people who loved her. According to the organization, Gloria's nearly century of life was well lived, and she continued working for equality until the end.
Steinem gained prominence in the late 1960s and established herself as one of the most influential voices in the fight for gender equality. In 1972, she participated in the creation of Ms. magazine, a publication that became a reference in the debate about the female condition and helped expand the discussion on topics such as reproductive rights and violence against women.
