After a weekend of clashes that left four people dead, the Special Operations Battalion (Bope) of the Rio de Janeiro Military Police set up an advanced base in the city's Southwest Zone. The installation took place on Friday in a forest area between the communities of Muzema and Rio das Pedras, also near the Corredor do Itanhangá, a set of transit roads that borders the region.
The action has no set end date and aims to combat the war between criminal factions that dispute territories in the region. The camp serves as a base for police movement, giving them access to trails used by criminal groups to move around and attempt to invade areas controlled by rival criminals.
In addition to Bope, other units from the Special Operations Command (COE) of the PM and local battalions, such as the 31st BPM, are participating in the operation. The military presence aims to deter the violence between factions that has been causing deaths in the region.
