Grace Jamison, a 20-year-old American, lost her vision after developing a rare eye infection caused by Acanthamoeba, a microorganism she describes as a "comeador de córneas ameba." The young woman relates the beginning of the problem to her habit of showering while wearing contact lenses.

The case began about a year ago when Grace was 19 and was in the Dominican Republic on a religious mission. A contact lens wearer since age 14, she told People magazine that she used to keep them on during showers and only removed them before bed.

A few days after arriving in the Caribbean country, itching, dryness, and redness appeared in her eyes, along with strong sensitivity to light. In approximately one week, her vision became so blurry that she could barely see. Initially, the doctors gave her another diagnosis before identifying the infection caused by Acanthamoeba.
