Prime Minister Luís Montenegro devalued commentators' criticism of the decision to keep Neves in office. In a statement that generated reaction, Montenegro stated: "God forbid if I governed by listening to what the commentators say", clearly expressing his disagreement with the media pressure.
The head of the executive highlighted that commentators are part of how democracy functions, but made clear that he does not intend to give excessive attention to opinions expressed in the public sphere. Montenegro argued that he does not intend to "diminish people who voice opinions in the public square", acknowledging their role in the democratic system, although without considering their opinions as determinant for his governance decisions.
