GNR alerts to scam with fake bank cards sent by mail

Jornal de Mafra3 September 2026 at 13:06

The Portuguese National Republic Guard issued an alert about a new scam involving the sending of falsified credit cards, personalized with the victims' names, accompanied by letters that imitate official bank communications. The GNR disclosed the scheme through a video on social media.

The letters sent inform recipients about the replacement of an "expired" card and instruct them to proceed with urgent activation through a QR code. The link in the code redirects to a cloned website, where victims enter personal and banking data that is subsequently used for money theft and identity falsification.

According to the GNR, this method has registered a "strong growth," fueled by Portuguese trust in postal and banking services. The Guard reinforces that citizens should distrust unexpected communications, always confirm authenticity with their bank, and avoid accessing links sent by letter, SMS, or email.
