Approval of the framework that allows hiring nurses depends on the Finance Ministry, SNS Director states

Correio da Manhã3 September 2026 at 12:27

The approval of the framework that allows hiring nurses is dependent on the Ministry of Finance, according to Álvaro Almeida, Director of the National Health Service. The official acknowledged that the situation creates obstacles to hiring these health professionals.

Álvaro Almeida stated that, in the case of doctors, "there have been authorizations" for hiring, which allows addressing some of the SNS's needs. However, for nurses, the reality is different.

The SNS Director acknowledged that, in the case of nurses, "there is no legal framework provided for case-by-case authorizations," which means there is no flexibility for occasional approvals as happens with doctors.

This difference in treatment between doctors and nurses raises questions about the SNS's capacity to reinforce its nursing teams, with the solution remaining dependent on a decision at the Finance level.
