Inland Sea: Where the Desert Meets the Sea

SAPO Notícias3 September 2026 at 11:28

The Inland Sea, also known as Khawr al Udayd, is one of Qatar's most spectacular landscapes, located in the southeastern part of the country, approximately an hour and a half's drive from Doha. What makes this location unique is the fact that the golden dunes of the Arabian Desert converge directly with the warm waters of the Arabian Gulf, creating a landscape of great natural beauty where the desert meets the sea.

This natural phenomenon is considered one of the last virgin deserts in the world, remaining relatively preserved from human intervention. The area is bordered by impressive dunes and offers a striking visual experience, with the turquoise-blue waters of the Gulf contrasting against the golden tones of the surrounding sand.

Access to the Inland Sea can be done by road, and visitors from Doha often make the day trip to witness this singular landscape. The region is also recognized for its biodiversity, hosting various species of birds and marine life in its shallow, warm waters.

This destination represents one of Qatar's most valuable natural treasures, providing visitors with the opportunity to experience one of the most dramatic junctions between two distinct ecosystems — the arid desert and the marine environment — in a single location.
