The Local Health Unit (ULS) of Alto Alentejo rejected any interpretation that points to a decrease in oncology response at Portalegre Hospital, guaranteeing that the service will be reinforced. In a statement, the board of directors stated that a set of measures aimed at reinforcing and developing the Oncology Unit is being prepared, foreseeing the reinforcement of differentiated human resources and the improvement of infrastructure and organizational conditions.
According to the ULS, the investment aims at the continuity of care provided to cancer patients, the improvement of quality and accessibility of the care response, the development of the capacity for monitoring and treating patients, and the adequacy of response to the growing number of clinical situations observed in the region.
The PS questioned the Government about the changes being prepared in the hospital's oncology service, demanding to know which clinical, technical, and care foundations support the decision. The question, signed by seven socialist deputies including Luís Moreira Testa, was addressed to the Health Minister, Ana Paula Martins.
The Portalegre District Federation of PS also alerted to the possibility of restructuring the oncology service. The president of the socialist federation, Tiago Teotónio Pereira, explained that the concern is about obtaining guarantees that the response to patients will continue to be ensured with quality.
