New York public schools will ban, for one school year, the use of generative artificial intelligence tools by students up to the 8th grade. The measure covers generative AI programs intended for students and also prevents the use of companion chatbots at all grade levels.
The decision was made by New York public schools and specifically applies to students in elementary and early secondary education, who attend the first eight years of schooling.
In addition to the ban for younger students, the measure also extends to the use of companion chatbots, which are prohibited from being used by students of any grade level.
This ban will last for a full school year, functioning as a trial period during which the effectiveness and need to extend or review the measure in the future may be evaluated.
