New York City temporarily bans use of AI by students up to eighth grade

New York City implemented a temporary ban on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) by students up to eighth grade. This measure was approved with a duration of one year and aims to regulate the use of this technology in the public school environment.

According to Deutsche Welle, this ban should affect approximately 600,000 public school students in the city, out of a total of one million students. This means that the majority of elementary and early secondary school students will be prevented from using AI tools during the period of the measure.

The decision comes in a context of growing debate about the impacts of artificial intelligence on education, particularly regarding academic integrity and the development of cognitive abilities of young students. This measure represents one of the first significant initiatives by a major American city to limit access to these technologies for younger students.
