Twenty years ago, Portuguese people were able to choose their electricity provider. It was on September 4, 2006 that the domestic segment was opened to competition in Portugal, allowing consumers to freely select their electricity provider.
Since then, the liberalized market has brought significant changes for consumers, who now have the possibility to compare and choose between different operators and tariffs in the energy sector.
Not all aspects of liberalization went without problems, and it is acknowledged that the process faced some difficulties and challenges over the years.
However, experts consulted on the subject argue that, overall, the electricity market liberalization process was beneficial for Portuguese consumers, despite the setbacks encountered.
