A 57-year-old man was arrested by the PSP in Évora on suspicion of domestic violence and aggravated threat. The incident occurred on August 30th, inside a residence in the city. According to the PSP, the suspect allegedly physically assaulted his wife and threatened her with an axe moments before the officers arrived at the scene.
The couple's son tried to intervene to defend his mother, and was also threatened by his father, this time with a knife. The specialized domestic violence teams from the Évora Police Station went to the scene after being made aware of the situation.
The investigations carried out by the Criminal Investigation Unit revealed that the alleged violence against the woman was not an isolated episode. The victim had reportedly been subjected to domestic violence behaviors by the suspect for about 40 years, a situation that had progressively worsened.
The man was arrested on the morning of September 2nd, pursuant to an arrest warrant requested by the PSP from the Judicial Authority. After being brought before the Criminal Investigation Judge, he was placed in preventive detention as a measure of coercion.
