China's Ministry of Commerce today demanded that France "immediately" suspend the penalties applied to so-called "ultra-fast fashion." The fines range between 0.5 and 12 euros and took effect this month.
The penalties affect Chinese e-commerce platforms, including Shein and Temu. These companies are the main targets of the French measure that taxes the fast fashion sector.
The Chinese demand comes in response to legislation approved by France, which imposes progressive taxes on fashion products arriving in the country at very low prices. The measure is part of a European trend of regulating the sector.
China considers the penalties unjust and demands they be removed immediately, arguing that its companies comply with international trade rules. This commercial tension arises at a time of growing friction between China and various European countries regarding e-commerce practices.
