The average price of milk purchased from individual producers fell in June to 0.447 euros per kilogram, the lowest value since the beginning of the year, according to data from the Office for Planning, Policies and General Administration. The highest value had been recorded in January, at 0.465 euros per kg. The downward trajectory began in January with 0.462 euros, dropping to 0.456 euros in March, rising slightly in April, falling again to 0.450 euros in May and 0.447 euros in June. Organic milk at production also dropped from 0.552 euros in January to 0.509 euros in June.
During the same period, powdered milk at factory exit increased from 204.05 euros per 100 kg in January to 222.21 euros in March. Butter showed positive evolution, going from 409.57 euros per 100 kg in April to 448.99 euros at the end of the same month. Flemish cheese also rose from 666.57 euros per 100 kg in January to 672.43 euros in February.
In early August, milk producers disputed a new decrease in the price paid to producers and demanded its restoration in September, warning of abandonment of the activity due to rising production costs. According to the Portuguese Milk Producers Association, cooperatives associated with Lactogal communicated at the end of July a decrease of 1.5 cents per liter starting from August 1st. On the island of São Miguel, in the Azores, Prolacto and Insulac responded with decreases of two and 1.5 cents per liter, respectively.
The Aprolep leadership regretted that neither cooperatives nor private industries responded positively to their appeal, indicating that buyers who had not followed the August decrease have now dropped in September. According to the association, accumulated in 2026, the decreases in milk prices will represent 60 million euros less for producers. Aprolep awaits a response from the Government on the price decrease, the increase in production costs, aggressive promotions with Azorean milk and imports of French milk by Intermarché, considering the announced aid insufficient and lower than that granted to Spanish farmers. Lactogal and the Ministry of Agriculture did not respond to the news agency's contacts.
