The former British boxer Jimmy Batten died at 70 on Wednesday (2), after years battling Parkinson's disease and the effects of brain damage from his long career in the sport. A prominent figure in British boxing in the 1970s and 1980s, he was known for his resilience in the ring and for facing the legendary Panamanian Roberto Durán.
His death was mourned by former gym mates. John H. Stracey, former world champion and training partner of Batten at Terry Lawless's traditional gym in London, paid tribute to his friend on social media. In the message, Stracey described Batten as his great stablemate and training partner over many years.
