More than 80 dead on migrant boat adrift near the Canary Islands

RTP Notícias3 September 2026 at 10:50

More than 80 people died on a migrant boat that was adrift near the Canary Islands, according to information from the EFE news agency. Spanish maritime authorities rescued the vessel during the early morning hours of Thursday.

The boat had departed from Gambia almost a month ago, indicating an extremely long and dangerous journey across the Atlantic Ocean. The conditions on board reportedly resulted in the deaths of dozens of people during the crossing.

This shipwreck represents one of the most serious migratory tragedies recorded on the Canary Islands route, one of the most dangerous passages for migrants attempting to reach European territory. The route is frequently used by people fleeing West African countries in search of better living conditions.

Spanish authorities proceeded with the rescue of survivors, but the death toll exceeded 80 people, making this incident one of the biggest humanitarian tragedies in the region.
