The Associação Veteranos Lanceiros de Portugal (AVLP) will promote on Saturday, September 5th, an initiative called "Cartas do Ultramar – Memória, Afecto e Identidade: As Madrinhas de Guerra Vimaranenses e os Combatentes". The event aims to evoke the memory of the so-called "Overseas War", the Portuguese colonial conflict.
The initiative focuses on the role of the "War Godmothers" from Guimarães, women who maintained correspondence with combatants during the war, offering emotional support and keeping alive the connection between the soldiers and their homeland.
The Associação Veteranos Lanceiros de Portugal is the organizing entity of this activity, which aims to preserve and disseminate the historical memory of Portuguese soldiers who fought in the former Portuguese Colonies.
The event will take place in Guimarães, a city whose population is referred to as "vimaranenses". The initiative combines the themes of memory, affection, and identity in the context of this period of Portuguese history.
