They use the name of the Bishop of Viana do Castelo to try to cheat

Correio da Manhã3 September 2026 at 10:07

The Diocese of Alto Minho issued an alert about emails being sent to priests in the district of Viana do Castelo, falsely in the name of D. João Lavrador, Bishop of Viana do Castelo. The objective of these messages is allegedly to try to deceive the recipients, possibly to obtain money or sensitive information.

The scammers are using the name and authority of the Bishop to give credibility to their fraudulent messages. This situation led the Diocese to alert priests to be vigilant and not fall for this type of scheme.

D. João Lavrador is the Bishop of Viana do Castelo, a diocese that covers the district of Alto Minho. His identity is being misused for fraud purposes, which represents an abuse of the trust associated with the figure of a bishop.

This type of scheme, known as phishing or social engineering fraud, exploits the trust that people place in religious authority figures to deceive victims. The Diocese recommends that any suspicious communication be verified directly before any response.
