The Republican National Guard issued a warning about a new form of fraud that arrives through traditional mail. The scammers send a letter with a bank card in the victim's name, containing a malicious QR code that serves to steal money and personal data.
The scheme uses a variant of traditional phishing, replacing email links with QR codes. The GNR alerts that the trick relies on urgency, as the letter informs that it is necessary to activate the card immediately, threatening with the blocking of the bank account.
This scam is considered difficult to detect because it uses physical mail, a channel associated with greater legitimacy than an email or SMS. Furthermore, the scammers accumulate personal data collected on cloned websites, feeding identity falsification schemes.
In case of doubt, the GNR recommends contacting the bank directly through official channels to verify the authenticity of the communication.
