The National Republican Guard (GNR) intercepts on average around 280 drunk drivers every week on Portuguese roads, according to data presented by the police force.
Between January 1 and July 31, 2026, GNR detained more than 8,000 drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol. During the same period, more than 8,800 crimes related to this offense were also registered.
Authorities warn about the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol, considering these numbers concerning for road safety in Portugal.
