New telescope instrument in Chile with Portuguese "hand" makes first observation

The latest instrument installed on the VLT telescope in Chile, the "Moons" spectrograph, made its first observation. The equipment was successfully activated and is already collecting astronomical data.

The Faculty of Sciences of the University of Lisbon (FCUL) officially announced this first observation. The institution has Portuguese scientists involved in the development and operation of the equipment.

The Moons spectrograph is one of the most recent technological tools to join the Very Large Telescope (VLT), one of the most powerful observatories in the world, located in the Atacama desert, in Chile.

This instrument will allow astronomers to analyze the light of distant stars and galaxies with great precision, contributing to advances in the understanding of the universe. The Portuguese participation in this project underlines Portugal's role in international astronomy.
