Researchers from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) found parasites in 96% of the 53 specimens of skipjack tuna analyzed in the laboratory. The skipjack tuna is a type of tuna and is among the five most important species in world fishery production. The study was published in the journal Ocean and Coastal Research.
In 58.5% of the fish analyzed, parasites were present in the muscle tissue, which is the part of the fish consumed by people. Among the parasites identified was Anisakis, which can cause infections and allergic reactions in humans.
The 53 specimens of skipjack tuna were captured in various locations, including the Rio de la Plata region. The researchers highlighted the importance of sanitary inspection to ensure food safety for the population.
