What is properly seasoning food?

Seasoning food may seem simple, but doing it well requires understanding what is being prepared and choosing elements capable of enhancing it without covering up what the product itself has to offer. Salt, garlic, onion, pepper, and herbs are common ingredients, but gathering them together is not enough for a good result.

There is no single formula for seasoning. A delicate vegetable should not be seasoned the same way as an intensely flavored meat. A fish has distinct characteristics from a bean, just as roasting, grilling, sautéing, or boiling produces different results on foods.

The elements that can participate in the composition are salinity, acidity, fat, pungency, herbs, and spices. More important than gathering many elements is understanding the function of each one and the effect you intend to achieve with the seasoning.

One of the most common mistakes in the kitchen is associating the use of many seasonings with more flavorful food. In fact, more seasoning does not mean more flavor, and the secret lies in knowing how to use each ingredient in a balanced and conscious way.
