Are you on vacation? Heat extends until the weekend and yellow warning reaches more districts

SIC Notícias3 September 2026 at 08:22

The Portuguese Institute for the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) forecasts for today on the Portuguese mainland mostly clear or clear skies, with mist or fog in some locations on the North and Central coast. The wind will be light and dust in suspension is also expected in the air.

Temperatures will rise across the mainland territory, prolonging the heat wave that has been felt over the past few days. This intense heat is expected to persist until the weekend, keeping temperatures high during this period.

The IPMA has also issued a yellow warning for several districts across the country, covering more areas than before. This warning refers to the adverse weather conditions associated with intense heat.

The yellow warning, which represents the second level of danger on the three-level scale used by the IPMA, alerts to the need for caution regarding the high temperatures expected for the coming days.

"We can have more than double the normal rainfall": forecast alerts for more rain and flooding on the way to Portugal in this period

A very strong El Niño is intensifying in the Pacific and could bring Portugal an autumn and winter with precipitation well above normal, with the possibility of recording more than double the usual rainfall in certain periods. NOAA assigns more than 90% probability that the phenomenon will reach very strong intensity between autumn and winter 2026/27, possibly even surpassing historical records. Although the direct relationship between El Niño and rain in Portugal is not automatic, an also very warm Atlantic Ocean can provide additional humidity, increasing the risk of intense precipitation episodes and exceptional flooding. The forecast is classified as seasonal and not as a weather warning, with still great uncertainty about the realization of these scenarios.
