GNR removes approximately 280 drunk drivers from the roads per week

SAPO Notícias3 September 2026 at 07:33

Between January and July, the Republican National Guard (GNR) removed approximately 280 drunk drivers from the roads per week, totaling more than 8,400 arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol. This operation is part of the GNR's road enforcement efforts to combat driving under the influence of alcohol.

The arrested drivers were kept off the roads for more than 101,000 hours in total. This number results from the application of the minimum 12-hour ban to each person arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol.

The GNR continues to carry out enforcement operations on Portuguese roads to ensure road safety and prevent accidents caused by drivers under the influence of alcohol, which is one of the main causes of road accidents on the country's public roads.
