The Timorese president, José Ramos-Horta, today paid homage to Father Martinho da Costa Lopes in the city of Manatuto, located east of Dili. During the ceremony, Ramos-Horta remembered the priest as the "voice of the voiceless", recognizing his role in defending the most vulnerable communities.
Manatuto is the birthplace of the former apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Dili, where this numerous tribute took place. The event brought together authorities and citizens to celebrate the memory of what was a striking figure in the religious and social history of Timor-Leste.
Father Martinho da Costa Lopes played a significant role during troubled periods of Timorese history, becoming recognized for his commitment to the most disadvantaged and for his action in defense of human rights.
