The GNR (Guarda Nacional Republicana) detains on average 280 drivers per week with alcohol levels considered criminal, that is, above the legal limits that transform the infraction into a criminal offense. Between January 1 and July 31, the cumulative total of detentions reached 8,438 cases. The GNR is the police force responsible for these inspections on Portuguese roads, conducting regular alcohol checks to prevent accidents. The data refers exclusively to drivers with blood alcohol levels that exceed the limits considered criminal, not including the less serious infractions.
