The Republican National Guard (GNR) intercepts weekly about 280 drivers with alcohol levels considered a crime, revealing a concerning scenario of road accidents in Portugal. This number represents an average of arrests per week over the first seven months of the year.

Between January 1st and July 31st, authorities seized a total of 8,438 drivers for driving under the influence of alcohol at criminally punishable levels. This statistic highlights the persistence of the problem of driving under the influence of alcohol on Portuguese roads.

The arrests made by the GNR specifically refer to cases where the blood alcohol level exceeds the legal limits that constitute a crime, distinguishing them from minor offenses for lower levels of alcohol in the blood.
