The Republican National Guard (GNR) intercepts around 280 drivers every week with blood alcohol levels considered criminal. This is one of the conclusions of a study carried out by the corporation on road accidents related to alcohol.

The period of the week when the GNR catches the most drunk drivers is during the weekend, particularly on Friday night into Saturday and Saturday night into Sunday. During these days, checkpoints are intensified and the number of arrests for driving under the influence of alcohol increases significantly.

Authorities warn of the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol, which continues to be one of the main causes of fatal accidents on Portuguese roads. The GNR frequently reinforces enforcement operations during these critical periods.
