The State Budget for 2027 includes a growth in pension expenditure of about two billion euros, representing the largest estimated increase since the period of high inflation that followed the invasion of Ukraine. This significant increase contrasts with previous years, in which pension increases were determined by the legal formula for updating benefits.
However, the Executive does not attribute this exceptional growth to the automatic application of the same legal formula, which suggests that other factors are contributing to the increase in expenditure. The Public Finances scenario thus points to increased pressures on the pension system.
This situation occurs in the context of the preparation of the State Budget for 2027, a document being prepared by the government that will define public expenditure priorities for the next year. The planned growth in pensions will have a significant impact on Portuguese public accounts.
