The great business of selling academy players: Real Madrid exploits it and Barça starts to explore it

El Periódico Mediterráneo - General3 September 2026 at 06:27

Real Madrid made four signings this summer with transfer payments, for which they paid 225 million euros fixed, a value that may increase with different variables. The players signed were Diomande for 125 million, Cucurella for 55 million, Espí for 25 million, and Dumfries for 20 million.

Almost all of that expenditure, about 210 million euros, was financed through the sale of academy players (canteranos) with whom the club does not plan to count on in the medium term. This strategy allowed Real Madrid to make a significant investment in the market without seriously compromising its finances.

Barcelona, for its part, is beginning to explore this business model, which consists of using homegrown players as currency or a source of revenue to finance higher-cost signings. This approach represents a shift in the way the two major Spanish clubs traditionally operated in the transfer market.
